Help?!?

I have three questions for y'all.

1. Anyone know if you can clean a self-cleaning oven by hand or with some sort of product? I'm scared to lock my oven at extremely high temps. And it is beyond filthy.

2. Does anyone have a great pie recipe? I have to make two for a dinner next Wednesday and I'm not a pie kind of girl so it must be easy and no-fail.

3. I also have to make a cobbler of some sort for Sunday. I don't make cobbler very often. I think someone is bringing peach and someone is bringing apple. I was thinking some sort of berry cobbler. Ideas? Recipes? I'm picky about my cobbler though. I don't like a doughy crust. I like it to be more pie-crust consistency. I know I can google a recipe but I prefer to make on that is tried and true.

THANKS in advance!

Here's the link for my "go to" pie recipe. It gets lots of compliments every holiday. http://blueskiesfromnowon.blogspot.com/2009/03/savory-saturday-caramel-pecan-pie.html

Yes, you can clean your oven with regular oven cleaner. After using my self-cleaning oven in my other home and it caught fire, I'm afraid of doing it again. So, I use Easy-Off and it works great.

Cobblers. I make them often and use my grandmother's easy and yummy recipe. Super Simple ... 1 cup of self-rising flour, 1 cup of sugar, 1 cup of milk, 1 stick of butter and approx. 2 cups of fruit. Mix all together, pour into a oven-safe bowl and bake for 35 minutes (until top is golden brown) at 350 degrees.

You can use any fruit. I use blueberries (current fave), strawberries, apples, cherries, peaches, etc. You can also cheat and use can fruit which is just as good. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream. Yum.

I posted my SIL's oatmeal pie recipe the other day. It tastes like pecan pie without the pecans. Very easy and very good.

I've made a cobbler very similar to this one and it's super easy. I would think any berry would be good - I know you can get blueberry & blackberry pie filling. I also love cherry. : )

German Chocolate Pie
(my husband refers to it as "nearly as good as you know what pie")

1 pie crust (regular, not graham cracker), baked in pie pan

1 larger size box vanilla cook & serve pudding

1 Bakers German Chocolate bar - break off one square for garnish (it's in the baking aisle next to the baking chocolate, green box I think!)

1/3 c. butter
1/3 c. coconut
1/3 c. pecans, chopped
1/3 c. brown sugar

bake single pie crust in pan, don't forget to poke the bottom and sides of crust before baking

Allow crust to cool

in a small sauce pan, melt butter, pecans and brownsugar together, bring to a slight boil for just a minute or so then add coconut.
Stir to incorporate coconut.
Pour mixture in to bottom of pie crust and spread around.

prepare pudding according to recipe, add German chocolate bar in squares as pudding boils (save one square for garnish). Stir constantly until chocolate bar is completely melted and incorporated.

Pour pudding into pie crust.
Allow to cool in fridge.
Top with cool whip and grate remaining chocolate square over the top.

YUMMMMM.

i used to make this all the time but i can't get the german chocolate bar anywhere up here. I think I'll have my mom or sister mail me one since this is dave's favorite pie!

Also, do not fear the self-cleaning setting on your oven! They usually work amazingly, just be sure to do it while you are home and awake. I LOVE self cleaning ovens!

The pies...not sure of any EASY one. Hope the people who answered above have a good suggestion for you. The cobbler..I only have a doughy type one. So I am of little or no help. LOL

However, I do have a self cleaning oven which I run all the time. Honestly though, if yours is really bad you might want to clean it yourself but I do think you have to use the Easy Off for Self Cleaning ovens or risk damaging the finish...or some such thing.
The more you run the self clean, the better it works..I do mine about once a month except in the summer.

Check out www.thepioneerwoman.com website. She has a cooking tab where you can search all of her recipes. She recently did a pie week over Thanksgiving and has some really great recipes! She has a killer berry cobbler recipe too. Good luck!

On the pies--two words:
Marie Callender's!
I'm obviously not a pie making machine!
God bless!

Just scrape out the big chunks, set your oven and open the window....

I like blackberry cobbler the best, and I use biscuit dough sweetened with sugar and dropped by the spoonful onto the hot berry mixture. I have never had a problem with it being doughy or undercooked. Dropping it creates all sorts of crunchy knobs on the baked dough.

I think I'm going to make blackberry cobbler now.

Take a look at http://thepioneerwoman.com/cooking/. I used her Dreamy Apple Pie recipe and it was out of this world! Easy to make too. I just bought the Pillsbury frozen pie crusts. She also has some cobbler recipes.

Hope this helps!

Mer,

I would highly recommend the Turtle Pumpkin Pie recipe from the Kraft website. I made it the past two Thanksgivings, and people raved about it. I love plain pumpkin pie, but this one adds pudding mix and whipped cream in the filling, and is topped with caramel sauce. Delish!

I don't know how quickly you want your oven clean :) but for future cleaning, here's a link to what I use and sell. It's made from cherry pits, and it's safe for you to use. Oven cleaners can be so toxic as are the carcinogens coming from the self-cleaning oven setting!

Here it is: http://www.shaklee.net/sarahmaffet/product/00430

Do you remember the peanut butter pie from Sue's Kitchen? Wasn't your rehearsal dinner there? I have the recipe somewhere if you want it. It is so easy & so delicious!

If you have a flat-top oven don't use the self-cleaning feature. My oven guy was here to fix my burner yesterday and when I asked him about it he said he recommended not using it because it will blow the electric display panel.

If you like raspberries I have an easy recipe. You basically mix sugar into some berries, pour them into an unbaked pie crust, cover with cream and bake (a few other minor things, but you get the gest of it). If you are interested I can give you the exact measurements. I don't make it in the winter because raspberries cost so much more, but it would be pretty for Christmas.

lock the oven and let it do the work! yes, it does get hot but i wouldn't do mine any other way. you'll be glad you did.

good luck with the pie & cobbler.

I know you are not a chocolate lover, but this fudge pie (http://leahbellesrecipes.blogspot.com/2010/12/fudge-pie.html) is the EASIEST and yummiest pie ever!!!

There are only 6 ingredients, and it makes 2 pies. I have been making them this Christmas for parties and to give as gifts.

p.s. i understand your fear of the self-cleaning oven. that's why i don't leave it cleaning while i am gone. however, there is nothing easier than shutting the door and turning it on!

I use my oven's self-cleaner. When I'm home, obviously. Hey, it's like free heat. LOL. Works great! My mom always used hers...
