SMP 7.18.13

Well, my pool-side experiment worked! Hooray! Hopefully that means I can blog more often like say, from the carpool line. I'm not ready to think about carpool lines yet though. We still have lots more fun to milk out of summer!

We had a nice family vacation last week. Our original plan (California) had to be amended because we needed to put some vacation funds toward our vehicle purchase so we settled upon Telluride, CO instead. We've lived in Colorado for nearly ten years and have never visited Telluride. I'm just sad it took us that long to discover this town. It was GORGEOUS.

I sort of laugh because it seems like every new place I visit in our beautiful state quickly becomes my favorite but honestly? Tellluride IS my favorite. Hands down.

Here are a few pics. I will write more about our time there tomorrow (fingers crossed!)

Remote blogging

The kids and I are at the pool today and since I forgot to bring my book I downloaded a Blogger app to try blogging from my phone. I know, I know...I'm late to the party!

*Crossing my fingers that this will post!*

July Currents

Current Read: While we were on vacation last week I read Happy, Happy, Happy: My Life and Legacy as the Duck Commander by Phil Robertson. I'm a Duck Dynasty fan and I respect Mr. Robertson even more after reading this book. It's a fast and easy read, and I happen to think the man is brilliant! Next up is something by Kent Haruf. I have two of his books by my bed and can't decide which one to begin first. I'll probably choose The Tie that Binds, because it's due back from the library soon!

Current Playlist: Just a bunch of current pop songs that my kids have downloaded. With a bit of Josh Turner mixed in. :)

Current Color: I'm loving blues this summer. Blue has never been a "go-to" color for me, but I'm still stuck on turquoise, with navy blue running a close second. And then of course there is aqua blue (the color of the pool!) that just screams SUMMER!

Current Drink: Anything cool and refreshing. I saw this recipe for a dairy-free/vegan strawberry milkshake yesterday and I can't wait to try it. I get excited when I find non-dairy substitutes for things I love.

Current Food: I had an amazing spinach salad in Denver last weekend that had a lemon-herb vinaigrette dressing on it. I've been trying to replicate it ever since. This recipe is pretty close, but I still have some tweaking to do. Last night I made these veggie tacos and they were SO good. I've got dibs on the leftovers!

Current Favorite Favorite: Zoya nail polish. I picked up a bottle of this at Ulta while shopping with Sarah. They had a promotion going on (buy 2 get 1 free) and she chose a couple of colors she wanted for her birthday so my bottle was actually free. Zoya is free of formaldehyde and several other chemicals that I know nothing about but that aren't really good for you. What impressed me was that I put one coat on (on my toes) and it was great coverage that lasted 10 days without chipping, despite some serious walking/hiking mileage and two days at the pool. Those two things that usually destroy my pedis lickety-split. It's slightly more expensive than normal polish but I'm sold. I chose the color Sooki--a true red.

Current Addiction: Sno cones. With lots and lots of homemade, sugary syrups. Cherry is my favorite.

Current Wish List: I'd love to have a day with NOT ONE THING on my calendar. Hopefully soon...

Current Need: A haircut and a new planner. I've gotten in the habit of using a planner and mine expired in JUNE! I am not coping well.

Current Triumph: Well, I've been to the grocery store and cooked two meals since we returned from vacation. That feels like a triumph because it is always SO SO SO hard for me to get back in that groove after a week of being served. Anyone else?

Current Annoyance: Duplicity. And also my lack of blogging. Hope to remedy the latter this week.

Current Confession: Lately I've been watching old episodes of Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo. I can't explain it. I won't even try. That show is a train wreck and exploits that family, that child in so many ways but I can't tear myself away when it's on. It's awful and yet addicting. Ugh. Television at it's very worst. Seriously.

Current Blessing: The ability to be at home with my kids in the summer. Even though they're bigger now and are pretty self-sufficient I still enjoy being home with them during the day. I don't plan as many outings and fun, entertaining things as I used to when they were smaller but I still try to make summer feel like a special time.

Current Outfit: Running shorts, t-shirt...which will later change to capris, summer top, flip flops.

Current Excitement: I have some fun hiking plans in the next couple of weeks and we also have a trip to Arkansas/Missouri coming up. Oh....and one BIG, EXCITING night with Sarah coming up. I'm gonna leave you hanging on that one.

Current Project: Clean/organize our basement storage area. It's a disaster!

Current plans for the day: A little work, a little bit of cleaning/laundry (its SO daily!), and catching up with a friend later on. Hopefully a trip to Target too for the aforementioned planner + a birthday gift for a party Abbey is going to this week.

Peace out, peeps. Have a great Tuesday.

Ketchup!

Can you believe it's July? This summer is flying by much too quickly!

How about some catch-up? Or "ketchup" as I like to call it.

Good news--my nest is full once again. All of my kiddos are home! Will worked HARD in Winter Park and had a really great experience. Sarah had a great week in Puerto Rico and came home with all kinds of fun stories. Abbey enjoyed her week as an only child but is glad to have her siblings home! Not as glad as her parents are though.
We stopped to eat breakfast the morning we picked him up at Carver's in Winter Park. The restroom signs made me laugh out loud. I had to take pictures.
Sarah got in a few days after Will did, and I let everyone lay low most of last week. We hung out at home and went to the pool one day but that's about it. They needed that time to just rest up and relax. That's what summer is for, right?

One night last week our family went to the Josh Turner concert. John is working on a project with Mr. Turner (very cool!) so the rest of us finally got to meet him! It was a great show. He might turn me into a country music fan. I REALLY like him.
Yesterday John and I celebrated TWENTY THREE years of marriage. Twenty-three years of happy, hard, fun, and messy all bundled up into one beautiful, grace-filled life. I cannot imagine my life without John in it and I am beyond grateful for him. He loves me well. We celebrated by enjoying dinner on the patio of our favorite mexican place. It was perfect...very laid back and relaxing.

My anniversary gift? A new vehicle! I am no longer a mini-van owner!!! I got a little misty-eyed when John drove away in Minnie-the-van for the last time; she was a good fit for our family for so long. It was time to retire her though and I'm very happy to have a little more room and a little more power on the road. We've been shopping for a new vehicle for a few weeks now and let me just say that is NOT easy on a marriage. At least it's not on our marriage. Wowza. I happily sent John off alone to handle the deal on Saturday and told him to just surprise me. I knew what model he would buy--just not what year, what color, the interior, extra features, etc. I was truly surprised when he pulled in the driveway Saturday afternoon.

Over the weekend I uploaded 2243 pictures from my phone to my computer. Can you say lazy? I ordered a new phone over the weekend (anyone else do the iPhone 5 deal from Best Buy?) and they told me they could transfer my photos if I didn't have too many. Ummmmmm, I don't know for sure but I think 2200+ might be too many. Anyway, here are a few to share...

We took Sarah and her friend out to eat with us one night and I took this picture of the girls in the cut out thing they had on their patio...didn't realize the prominent, giant tequila bottle until I texted the pic to her friends' mom. Oops.
Ice cream at the Rock House...a summer tradition!
Anyone know what kind of flower this is? Mom? It's pretty!

For the Win!

I've had my share of Pinterest fails but lately I'm on a winning streak. Here are some of the yummy recipes I've tried...and LOVED...lately. Enjoy!

Crispy Caramel Nuts. I used raw pecans instead of walnuts. SO delicious. SO easy.

Avocado Chicken Salad. I made this one evening after a day at the pool. SO quick and tasty. I omitted the mayo.

Egg Muffins. I added sausage, onions, garlic, and cayenne to mine. Next time I'll add cheese!

Asian Lettuce Tacos with Peanut Sauce. I pinned this recipe a long time ago after having something similar at The Cheesecake Factory. These were delicious and the sauce is to die for. I added cilantro to mine.

Pesto Zucchini "Spaghetti". We don't like broccoli so I omitted that but it was pretty tasty (ummmmmm, because of the bacon) and we will make this again. I really want to buy one of these spiral peelers to make zucchini noodles but I think that's a pretty steep price for a kitchen gadget I wouldn't use regularly.

3--2--1

Late last month, we dropped Will off for his work-crew assignment at Crooked Creek Ranch Young Life camp and I went from having three kids at home to two.

Early Tuesday morning (and I'm talking 4AM early) we dropped Sarah off at church for her Puerto Rico trip so now I'm down to ONE kid at home.

Abbey has been looking forward to this week all year long. She refers to it as the "week-I-get-to-be-an-only-child". She woke up Tuesday morning grinning from ear to ear with excitement.
But don't be fooled--I tucked her in the night before and she was sobbing because she was going to miss her sister. I am beyond grateful for kids who love each other.

A few weeks ago, Abbey made a list of all the things she wanted to do while Will and Sarah were gone and we're doing our best to make a dent in it. So far we've been swimming, watched movies, eaten lots of ice cream, had a sleepover, been to Denver to American Girl and Justice (her two favorite stores), and one evening we took her to make a very special purchase she's been saving for. Ummmmmm, she's pretty much been in heaven and has a few more days to milk this for all she can.

As for Will--he's working hard and having a good time--but is VERY homesick. Can't wait to see that boy soon!

And Sarah? She made it safely to Puerto Rico and has texted a few beautiful pictures! Sending a kid out of the country for a week? Yeah, that requires a LOT of trust...and prayer. A group of kids from our church is there this week leading VBS and another mission project for our sister church in San Juan but they have lots of fun and beach time built in as well. I haven't actually talked to her but their leader has been great to post pictures on Facebook which helps this mama's heart!

Everyone should be back home sometime next week...and I'm looking forward to that more than you can know. And as much fun as Abbey has had this week, I think she's looking forward to it too!

SMP 6.18.13

SMP = Seven Minute Post

Hello blog readers. It's been awhile hasn't it?

Summer is in full swing here at the Life at 7000 Feet casa. I love this time of year. John has been super busy with work and I'm working two jobs until the end of this month so our brains haven't fully switched over to summer mode but there are indications of it everywhere!

So yeah, did you catch that I'm working two jobs? I resigned my Young Life admin job last month and will step away at the end of June. I've enjoyed that job but it was one of those part-time things that felt full-time and it was just too much for me. That's the thing about working from home...you're always "on". I didn't like feeling like I was constantly juggling work and family. I happened upon another job working for a friend who has a home business and it provides a lot more structure (i.e. office) and consistent hours and so far it's been a good fit. I'm really anxious to switch to only ONE job though. I've been carrying a heavy load lately. And am very much looking forward to vacation in July!

I appreciate the emails and texts and messages last week about our safety during another horrific wildfire outside of Colorado Springs. Ugh. Our family/home wasn't in immediate danger, but this fire came much closer to our community than the Waldo Canyon fire did last summer and impacted many of our friends. We were thrilled that all of our friends escaped damage to their homes despite the fire being on the edges of their neighborhoods. It's been very devastating for our community though--hundreds of homes were completely destroyed, including those of some folks from our church. It's truly heartbreaking, but it's also truly wonderful to see a community rise up and come together to support each other.

June Currents

Current Read: My husband finally finished Wild and handed it off to me. I started reading it yesterday and I'm hooked!

Current Playlist: I made a Chicago playlist the other day. Chicago as in the band, not the city. I recently learned about the country artist, Josh Turner, so he's getting a lot of play time because we're going to his concert later this month. There's a story there but I need to save that for another day.

Current Color: I'm loving turquoise lately. I found a cute turquoise necklace at my neighbor's garage sale last week and it matches a ring and some earrings I already had. Makes for a cute albeit matchy ensemble.

Current Drink: It's finally summer and I'm so much better at drinking water when it's hot. Word on the street though is that I make a mean Shirley Temple. Abbey had one in Denver with friends a few weeks ago and has been begging me to make them ever since. Here's the recipe link

Current Food: I'm quite obsessed with this 7 superfoods salad from Costco. It's yummy.

Current Favorite Favorite: John's mom gave us one of these steamers for Christmas and I forgot about it until last month when I had an item I really needed to de-wrinkle. Oh wow. For a girl who detests ironing, this small appliance is a game-changer.

Current Addiction: Words With Friends. I am crazy-addicted to that game.

Current Wish List: Some plants for the front porch. I know most of you get to start planting things in March, but around here it's not wise until late May or early June.

Current Need: I don't need anything at the moment, but Sarah is leaving for Puerto Rico next week and has quite the list. Hoping to tackle that in the next few days.

Current Triumph: Took Sarah swimsuit shopping last week and found a cute, modest suit at the FIRST store we went to. AND it was on sale! TRIUMPH indeed.

Current Annoyance: I have a bad cold that is kicking my butt. ANNOYING. I fought and kept this cold at bay the whole month of May, only to succumb during summer? Not happy about that.

Current Indulgence: Sleep and rest--because of the aforementioned cold.

Current Mood: Blah. I really feel pretty miserable at the moment because I'm sick.

Current Blessing: I've been able to talk to Will several times in the last week because we sent that boy a phone card in his first care package. He's working hard but having fun! I think he's a little homesick though I'm not sure he'd ever admit that.

Current Outfit: Running shorts, t-shirt...which will later change to capris, summer top, flip flops. :)

Current Excitement: I'm looking forward to lunch with a friend this week and also some pool time!

Current Project: I have a couple of painting projects I want to tackle, but honestly I need to get through June before I can start them.

Current plans for the day: Work a little. Clean a little. Mail another care package to Will. Rest. Read. Make dinner.

Current link: I cleaned my Dyson last week. Like too the whole thing apart and cleaned the filters, the attachments, the traps, the cannister...everything. It now runs like new and smells much, much better! This isn't my exact model, but I used this tutorial.

Six on Saturday

Six on Saturday is kind of like five on Friday but with a bonus, right?

1. I had a birthday this week marking forty-three years of life. It was a very good day! The best gift I received was this poem from my husband. He not only knows how to make me feel loved, but cherished. I am so very blessed.

2. On my birthday, John and I got up early and hiked before he went to work. I tripped over a rock or log or something and ripped my toenail. Not quite sure how it happened through my shoe AND sock, but there's a tear right down the middle.
(Yes I DID just post a picture of my toes. And that rip in my toe is even bigger now than it was then. Weird.)

3. We took Will to Crooked Creek Ranch Young Life camp yesterday where he'll be working for a MONTH. This is the longest he will be away from home to date. I got a little choked up when we pulled into camp but I pulled it together because I know this will be such a good experience for him and he's ready for it. Crooked Creek Ranch is GORGEOUS and I'm excited for what lies in store for Will.

4. I'm planning to hike a couple of 14ers this summer (not surprised are you?) and after driving through the mountains yesterday I'm so very glad we pushed our dates back because there is still a TON of snow on most of the taller peaks along the front range, and even a lot at just 9,000 and 10,000 feet. I was quite surprised by the amount of it. We'd originally planned to tackle one next weekend but July is looking more realistic. Stay tuned...

5. Even though summer started last week I'm still working a lot. Things are definitely less hectic though; my brain is only going in a dozen different directions as opposed to a hundred. That's an exaggeration, but the truth is I'm still not feeling like I'm 100% on top of my game. Case in point: I forgot to pick Abbey up from a playdate on Thursday. I was horrified. The other mom was gracious and I was only twenty-five minutes late (which is a lot for this punctual gal) but the bottom line is that I completely forgot my child. I've reached an all new parenting low.

6. I'm heading to the Young Life Garage Sale in a little while. It's another big fundraiser we have to raise money for summer camp. We typically end up having it on the coldest Saturday in May (not on purpose of course) but today should be nice and I am soooooooo thankful for that. If you're local, stop by The Home Depot in Monument. I'd be happy to send you home with some "treasures".

Basket Of Sunshine (Great teacher gift idea!)

Need a fun gift idea? I've got one for you!

How about a Basket Of Sunshine?

It's super easy and and turns out really cute--so cheerful and happy. All you do is get a basket and fill it up with items that are YELLOW! The possibilities are endless.

I got the idea from my friend, Heather, and I'm pretty sure she found it on Pinterest! She and I and another neighbor made one a few months back for a friend whose dad had recently been diagnosed with cancer and needed a little bit of "sunshine" during a hard time. You can't even see all the good stuff in there because we packed it full..but her family loved it.
I loved the idea so much that a friend and I made one for another friend's birthday!
Hint: Easter is a GREAT time to find lots of yellow stuff--yellow paper grass, Peeps, candy, etc.

And because I like to get as much mileage as I can from a great idea, I made one for Abbey's teacher for an end-of-the-year gift.
Target's dollar spot is a great place to find items--I found a lot for this basket and some items were even marked down from $1--score! Initially I thought finding yellow things would be challenging but you would be surprised how much you can find if you're really looking.

The possibilites are limitless and this is an easy idea that packs a big, BRIGHT punch! Enjoy!

News and Pictures and Links, Oh My!

It's officially summer at my house. My kiddos finished up last Thursday and we've enjoyed a nice long string of unstructured days. I adore summer and it's unhurried pace. It is without a doubt my favorite season of the year.

So...to quickly catch you up on what's been going on around here...
1. My big huge work fundraiser (golf tournament) is behind me and was a big success and I'm starting to feel sane again.
2. I have one more coming up this week but my part in this one is (thankfully) much less hands-on.
3. I haven't mentioned this before now, but one of my dearest friends is moving out of state and I had a few different chances to spend time with her and her family last week. It was a happy-sad week. I am going to miss her so much...
4. Another school year is in the books. HOORAY! Here are two pics I snapped on the last day.

These two finished their finals around lunchtime so I took them out to eat. They were both in a terrific mood. There's something about the last day of school that just makes everyone HAPPY!
I sent Abbey to school in shorts on the last day of school and the actual high temperature didn't climb out of the 40s that day. It was c-c-cold! I came home from running errands and traded my flip flops for boots and took Abbey some long pants to wear for recess but got there too late and discovered that she'd made it just fine in her shorts. She reminded me later that she's tough. And she's right. She IS!

Here are some other pics I found on my phone. Just be glad I spared you all the "selfies" that my kids take of themselves.
This just makes my heart smile. Please ignore the yard work that hasn't yet happened in our yard. Things are just now greening up in our part of Colorado.
John and I took our houseguest, Flat Stanley, up the Incline with us a couple of weeks ago. He loved it. Really.
I went again by myself a few days later and snapped this picture on the way back down Barr Trail. I seriously LOVE Colorado. The brilliant blue sky against the green tree line takes my breath away most days...

I have some links to share too...mainly just random stuff...which seems to fit in with the theme of this post, huh?

In the post below this one, I wrote about John and I meeting an author we love then catching up with each other over mexican food. Yeah, well...
I'm married to a writer who makes things sound so much better when HE writes about the same thing.

I finally caved and joined the Instagram craze. I'm learning my way around and need to get better at taking pics but it seems fun! Find me if you want to follow along: meredithblase

My sweet and talented friend, Allison, wrote a book that was published this spring. It is a children's book--In the Hall of the Mountain King--based on a Henrik Ibsen play and set to a piece of classical music. It's beautiful and interactive book and would make a perfect gift for children and/or music lovers in your life! I am so happy for and so proud of my friend.

Have any of you ever used Annie Sloan Chalk Paint? I have a project I want to tackle soon and am curious about this paint. Pinterest and Google make it sound awesome, but I'd love to hear from someone with personal experience.

John is reading this book right now and I'm DYING for him to finish (and for my work stuff to wrap up) so I can read it too. It's been on my list since my friend, April, mentioned it to me earlier this spring but John keeps sharing bits and pieces and I am even more curious to give it a go.

Last night John and I went to see Mud. LOVED it. I'd been hearing a lot of buzz from my Arkansas friends because it was filmed there, but it wasn't showing here until recently. It was really, really good (says the girl who likes indie films). So much of what's out there these days is unoriginal but this story was definitely unique and I woke up thinking about it this morning which says a lot. Plus, Matthew McConaughey + Reese Witherspoon? Never a bad combo.

Happy Tuesday, friends. Hope you all have a fantastic day!

Friday Five

1. It's amazing how much better nine hours of (glorious) sleep can make a person feel! I've been in overdrive this week getting ready for a big fundraiser on Monday and it all finally caught up with me last night. I took two Tylenol PM and went to bed at 8:30pm and for the first time in ages I slept until my alarm woke me up. Never underestimate the power of sleep! I'm refreshed and ready for another full day.

2. Last night John and I got to meet an author that we both admire. Kent Haruf is a Colorado native and  his books Plainsong and Eventide are two of my very favorites. Our local bookstore hosted him for an author reading and book signing event and it was wonderful. It was a very smallish and quaint affair and Mr. Haruf was charming as he spoke to an audience of about thirty-five folks about characters in the fictional town of Holt, Colorado. His newest book, Benediction, is the one he read from last night. John devoured it and our newly autographed copy is the first on my list for summer reading.

3. After the book signing, John and I walked down the street to our local mexican place and caught up with each other over dinner. I haven't been the easiest person to live with lately because I've been busy and distracted (and you could also insert crabby, impatient, short-tempered) so I was desperate for us to spend some time alone together. There's just something about sitting on a restaurant patio with a basket of chips and salsa between you on a perfect evening in May that makes all things right again.

4. This time next week it will be SUMMER VACATION! School gets out next Thursday and I am so so so so so so so so so happy. Excited for a much slower pace and MUCH less time spent in the car shuttling kids everywhere!!!!

5. Happy Friday!!! I am hoping for a low-key weekend with a few naps and some fun and some time outdoors mixed in. What are YOU looking forward to?

Mother's Day 2013

I asked John and the kids to write me a letter for Mother's Day this year. I really didn't need anything and I think the day is a bit over-hyped so a simple letter was my request. And sure enough, there were four envelopes on the kitchen table yesterday morning. They were each sweet in their own way...but Sarah's letter kinda took the cake. I asked her if I could share part of it and she agreed. So here ya go...

So, I know you like to make lists so I decided to make a list of things I love about you.
1. You ALWAYS drive/pick me up from school.
2. You get us Starbucks/McDonald's/In the Moo
3. You take care of yourself and your body.
4. You have the peppiest attitude EVERY DAY.
5. You make DELICIOUS food for dinner.
6. You take us to the POOL which is the best.
7. You have a GREAT relationship with Daddy.
8. You are SUPER creative.
9. You have a sense of style and don't wear mom jeans.
10. You are SMART. You can't do my math but you know how to find typos and you have good common sense.

Isn't that A-W-E-S-O-M-E? She knows me well. I love the part about mom jeans and not being able to do her math. Later in her letter she gives me props for being OCD, loving to hike, and eating "suppa" healthy (which makes the part about me taking my kids to McDonald's pretty comical, but TRUE!)

Anyway, yesterday was a great day. In fact, the whole weekend was great. They took me out to dinner, did my grocery shopping, cleaned my filthy van, and let me rest!!! Oh, and they took me to buy some shoes. I picked these--and love them! But I love my peeps MORE! So thankful for a wonderful weekend with them. It is such a privilege to be Will, Sarah, and Abbey's mom and to parent them together with John. I am truly blessed.

May Currents

Current Read: More or Less. This book is very much along the lines of 7 but I think I like it better. I'm reading it slowly, not by choice but because I've got a lot on my plate right now and most of my reading time is short snatches in the carpool line but this book draws me in and I'm sad when I have to close the cover!

Current Playlist: I downloaded this song after we sang it in church on Sunday and it's getting a lot of playtime. So is this. I made a new worship playlist last week and it's been my go-to playlist of late.

Current Color: Pink for my toes and green for my clothes! (A rhyme!)

Current Drink: Lots of coffee and lots of water, though I have been experimenting a bit with some almond milk smoothies. I usually use yogurt as a base for my smoothies, but my dairy issues have forced me to find an alternative and almond milk seems to be perfect for me.

Current Food: I've been craving strawberries--and the ones I've bought lately have been SO good. I'm also craving mexican food.

Current Favorite Favorite: Google Drive for document sharing/editing. I LOVE Google Drive!

Current Wish List: A nap! A maid! More hours in my day!

Current Need: Well, this sounds so shallow but I need to buy some cute closed toe shoes to wear to a golf tournament this month. Flip flops/sandals aren't allowed on the golf course and all my other shoes are clunky clogs that don't really go with capris. The author of the book I mentioned above would call this a "Rich Person Problem" and I agree.

Current Triumph: I slept until 5:20 this morning. Considering I've been waking up when the hour hand is on the 4, that's a triumph! I still woke up before my alarm went off so there's room for even greater triumph. Smile.

Current Annoyance: People who are never wrong.

Current Indulgence: 20 minutes a day of complete silence. My brain and body need this and I've been trying to incorporate it into my afternoon. No iPhone, no music, no books, no computer, NO stimulation of any sort. Just me, myself, and I sitting still and quiet for twenty minutes. It's wonderful. And restorative. And I'm finding it to be a crucial part of my day.

Current Mood: Happy and ready to start this day!

Current Blessing: I've had some big decisions to make lately and seeing God's hand in each of those decisions--during the entire process--has been a huge blessing. I feel such peace! Hope to share more soon.

Current Outfit: Jeans, t-shirt, cardigan. Trying to decide between flip flops or clogs. Hmmmmm. Maybe  boots!

Current Excitement: The weekend is getting closer! I have some fun plans and am also hoping to get caught up on some much-needed rest.

Current Project: Our Young Life area has two HUGE fundraisers in May that are pretty consuming as far as work and projects go. I am so looking forward to June and some down time!

Current plans for the day: Work. Make dinner (roasted chicken, roasted potatoes, sauteed squash--YUM!). Laundry. Carpool. Lather, rinse, repeat.

SMP = Seven Minute Post

Hooray for hump day! I'm in a really unhealthy pattern right now of staying up late and waking up crazy-early because of some big stuff on my plate. Coffee and Emergen-C are my beverages of choice these days. I have a couple of deadlines today that should bring an end to this particular pattern...at least temporarily. It will be nice to fall asleep without corporate logos and spreadsheets swirling through my brain! It is drizzly and dreary here this morning and if those deadlines weren't hanging over my head, you wouldn't have to twist my arm to get back in bed and sleep the morning away.

Will and I just took a second and counted the remaining days of school. My high schoolers have TWELVE more days and my elementary kiddo has TEN. The older two are not happy about those two extra days they have to go. I'm just ready for them all to be finished. I am so over homework and projects and driving to three different schools.

I don't think I've mentioned it on the blog, but Will is going to serve on work crew at a Young Life camp this summer for almost a MONTH! He leaves at the end of May and will be gone until almost the end of June. This hasn't fully sunk in for me and I truly don't even like to think about it. I'm super proud of him though and know that it will be a wonderful experience for him. Sarah is going to Puerto Rico on a mission trip with our church youth group while he's gone so that means that Abbey gets to be an only child for about a week. Can't EVEN express how much that girl is looking forward to that.

My seven minutes are up (more like nine, oops) and my pancakes are ready so I must go! Happy hump day, people!

SMP 5.6.13

Good Monday morning, blog friends!

I have just a few minutes to sit here and finish up my coffee before the craziness of the day takes over so I thought I might as well blog. About some totally nonsensical stuff.

John and I discovered this coffee a couple of summers ago while in Santa Fe and the bed and breakfast we were staying at served it every morning.
Imagine our surprise and delight when Costco started carrying it (for super cheap!)
Imagine our surprise and sadness when Costco suddenly stopped carrying it. That's the one thing that annoys me about Costco--when they suddenly stop carrying stuff I love. I guess enough customers complained because they had it again at the end of April as a special one time buy. Ummmm, yeah, we stocked up. It's really really good coffee.

John took the kids to the movie yesterday afternoon (Iron Man 3) and I opted out. I really needed to work but I went for a pedicure instead. My feet thanked me. I'd show you a picture of my pretty pink toes but they're currently covered by socks and running shoes (already got my miles in this morning).

Later today I'm getting my hair cut! And colored! It's been way too long and it's looking R-O-U-G-H. Root stripe, anyone? Between a pedicure and a haircut I should be walking with a spring in my step, huh? That's the plan anyway.

Y'all have a great Monday!

My Friday Five

1. I'm giving myself the gift of sanity and getting away to hike with a friend this morning even though I have a huge amount of work/home stuff that needed to get done yesterday. This crazy push to the end of May is making it harder and harder to fit hiking in but I'm determined because, like I said, it's necessary for my sanity.

2. Speaking of sanity, when my life is crazy-busy (and even when it's not) the TWO domestic duties that keep my home functioning smoothly are meals and laundry. If I can stay on top of those two things on a daily basis then I feel like I can keep some semblance of order and around here. I'm on my dinner game these days, but laundry? Oy! All I can say is that my husband is awesome! He's the best washer/drier/folder/putter-awayer there is! And no, he's not for hire.

3. I am crazy about the man I am married to. Seriously. I love him so much. I don't know the secret to a happy marriage but I'm thankful beyond belief that our relationship is what it is. It hasn't been without bumps and bruises along the way but we seem to be in a pretty sweet spot right now and we both thank God for that...often.

4. A friend offered me some of these nuts while at her house last week and I've been craving them ever since. I finally remembered to buy fresh rosemary and I made them yesterday. They are TASTY! I totally swiped her photo off of Facebook but trust me...you NEED to make these.

Instructions: Warm cashews in 350 degree oven until just beginning to brown. Mix all other ingredients and toss with warm nuts. **I only had 1/2 lb of cashews so I just halved this. Don't use dried rosemary--go for the fresh stuff...so delicious and your house will smell great while you're chopping it. I seriously can't quit eating these.

5. I can't think of anything else now that I have cashews on my mind! Happy Friday, y'all. Enjoy your weekend.

SMP = Seven Minute Post

I really and truly wanted to cry when I flipped my calendar over to May yesterday. Well, actually, I flipped my wall calendar to May on Monday and as for my planner (aka my sanity keeper) I've been flipping to May for months now to add stuff...and that's why I wanted to cry. It is going to be a wild ride here for a few weeks.

I'm definitely counting down to the end of school and SUMMER! And it won't be long!
By the way...this countdown app is quite fun! And free!

Did I mention it snowed yesterday? Yep. May-the-first and flakes flew all day long. It was awesome. Or not. But sunny again today and tomorrow...and hopefully all melted very soon!

I'm about to start my second cup of coffee. I've been waking up at 4:30AM these days with crazy to-do lists running through my head...NOT cool. Coffee and I are tight these days. I've been using almond milk in my coffee instead of half and half for about a week now and guess what? My stomach/intestinal issues have completely disappeared. Interesting, eh?

Could this post be any more boring? Oh my gosh.
Signing off now. Hope y'all have a terrific Thursday! SO close to the weekend...I think I can I think I can...
