Oh Gee...

I was catching up on Gretchen's blog this afternoon and saw this fun meme. I feel like all I've been posting about lately are meals and money and thought this would be a fun break from those themes.

Here's the deal:
If you want to play, leave a comment on this post letting me know, and I’ll assign you a letter. You write about ten things you love that begin with your assigned letter, and post it at your place. When people comment on your list, you give them a letter, and the chain continues on and on...

Gretchen gave me the letter "G".

1. Guacamole. Mmmmmmm...I could make a meal of it.
2. Girls' Night Out! It's even better when it's with my Summit Sisters!

3. Google! I love so many of the Google apps, but Gmail is my favorite! Not loving Google reader so much these days because it always reminds me how behind I am on blog reading. Just so you know--I have too many unread posts in my reader. Again.

4. Grosgrain ribbon. I seem to have a fetish for it. I have crazy amounts of ribbon--mostly grosgrain. Stripes, gingham, polka dots, and solids. I use it for lots of things and it just makes me happy.
5. Green. I love almost every shade but apple green is my favorite. Olive green would be a close second.

I found this piece of wallpaper the other day when I was cleaning out a closet. It's from my kitchen in Arkadelphia, and I still adore it--such lovely shades of green!

6. Gifts. I really enjoy giving them, though receiving them is fun too!

7. Gingerbread coffee from Trader Joe's. This can was a gift from my friend, Jamie. It is SO good. (I have an unhealthy obsession with TJ's these days.) The smell is heavenly. Aromatherapy in a can.
8. Gretchen. I was so disappointed that I didn't get to meet her when she and her family were here in November. One of these days, friend, one of these days...

9. Games. Our family loves games. We've played lots of Uno and Set lately, but I'm a big fan of Blokus, Scattergories, A-Z, Outburst, Catchphrase, and Cadoo. Oh, and Yahtzee. (And about a dozen or so more.)

10. Granola. Yeah, I'm one of those crunchy, Colorado health nuts.

(Yes, I'm aware that I left God off of my list. I thought you guys would understand that He's a given.)

Let me know if you want to play along and I'll assign a letter to you! (If you comment and don't hear back from me in your inbox...check the comments on this post. I STILL can't reply to some of you directly because your email isn't linked to your Blogger profile). (Ya'll are going to make me start naming names, aren't you?) *wink wink*

No Spend Challenge: Week Two

I wish I had posted this yesterday instead of today because things were going really well until then.

Here's the day by day breakdown.

Saturday:
-0-
Well, not exactly true, but I only bought groceries and groceries don't count. Plus, I did really well at sticking to my list and using coupons.

Sunday:
-0- It's easy to not spend money at church and at home. (smile)

Monday:
-0- Snow day! Stayed home all day in our pjs! (Bliss)

Tuesday:
$1.85 Mailed a package to a friend in Arkansas. (Steph, I'm mailing yours in February b/c it's going to cost more than $1.85.)

Wednesday:
-0- I was going to meet Jamie for coffee at Starbucks (still have a gift card balance!) but we ended up having coffee at her house instead.

See? I'm doing so good. $1.85
(Isn't there some verse about pride going before a fall?)(grin)

Thursday:
$25 John and I met our pastor for lunch--our treat--at Qdoba. We're trying to get connected at our new church and we've been trying to get together with him for awhile. It worked out we could all meet on this day and lunch was the best option. He's a great guy. He answered all of our questions, got to know us a little more, and I left feeling very encouraged and excited about this leg of our faith journey.

Friday:
$5 for Bunco. We play for money, and we each throw $5 into the pot. I tied for most wins last night and we decided to split the prize so I walked away with my original $5 plus $5 more. Nice.

I was feeling all smug at one point yesterday thinking that I was doing really well with my spending.

In the middle of Bunco I realized that I forgot all about two big things. John took the kids out for dinner...and to the movies last night. I didn't ask him for a total, but it was probably at least $40. Granted I needed them out of the house for a few hours, but I didn't think about the extra expense.

So...not as great a week as I'd hoped...but still not too bad. This challenge is proving to be challenging indeed!

For Harper

My sweet friend, Kelly, and her family need your urgent prayers. Kelly gave birth to Harper today. Harper is the daughter that Kelly and Scott have longed for, prayed for, and waited on the Lord for...and Harper's condition right now is very serious. Please, please lift this family up in prayer. They trusted God to bring Harper into this world, and they're trusting Him to now sustain her. Harper's little life is completely in His (strong and mighty) hands.

Frugal Friday: Going Paperless

My friend, Joanne, mentioned that she's going to begin Frugal Friday posts. I love that idea. In fact, I just read what she posted today about shopping from the pantry.

I have a frugal tip to share today too.

I haven't bought paper towels in years. I also try not to buy paper plates (that's harder), and if I had enough cloth napkins (something I'm hoping to make more of soon), I'd go totally paperless. Well, except for toilet paper.

I save money by not buying those things constantly and do our environment a huge favor as well.

Think about it. What do you use paper towels for that you can't use a dishtowel or rag for instead? And paper plates? It just takes a little more effort to wash a real one.

I'm also excited to check in with my an update on my  no-spend challenge this week. I did much better. I'll post that tomorrow because I'm sending the laptop to work again with John. My kids have a half day of school (3.5 day weekend!!!) and I have a big list to tackle before they get home!

Killing two birds with one stone...

My friend, Lisa, tagged me for a meme.

Lisa is a real life friend of mine. She and her family were members of a church John pastored in Arkansas and we love them dearly. I love that she recently started blogging, but it makes me painfully homesick for the community we left behind five years ago. I miss her very much. Ditto for Amber. And Stephanie. But I digress.

Lisa's meme instructs:
1) Choose the 4th folder where you store your pictures on your computer
2) Select the 4th picture in the folder
3) Explain the picture
4) Tag 4 people to do the same

Alrighty. It's a picture of Jack, our beagle.

He's a beautiful dog, isn't he? I think he probably needs one of the fancy dog collars that Lisa makes.

Seeing this picture reminded me of another meme that I was tagged for by Jen

Actually, she tagged Jack to write six random things about his life as a dog in our home. Here's what he'd write if he could.

1. I love my peeps. They take good care of me and love me. Especially my mom, Mer. She even lets me sleep in her favorite chair and now my smell is all over it. I love it, but I don't think she does because she keeps spraying fabric refresher on it. It must rub off on me a little because now I smell great too.

2. I've gotten really good at scavenging for people food at my house. If my family leaves anything on the table, I know how to pull the placemat to the floor so I can gobble up any leftovers. Our babysitter didn't know that about me and walked away from her pizza the last time she was here. I had two whole pieces. Pizza....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

3. Peanut butter treats from Trader Joe's are my absolute favorite. I got some for Christmas.
(Poor Jack is going to be so sad when our supply runs out.)

4. I love it when my mom loads the dishwasher. No matter where I am in the house, when I hear the door to that fascinating appliance open, I will head that way instantly. I especially love it when my mom doesn't rinse things off well and I get to (literally) lick the spoon. I don't think my mom loves it though. She gets kinda grumpy when I stand on the open dishwasher door.

5. My dad (John) is my most favorite person in my house. I hear the garage open every night when he comes home from work and I go C-R-A-Z-Y. I run to the back door and whine until I see his handsome face. He loves me and I know it.

6. I love it when my family walks me. They're slacking in that department these days...I think because it's so cold and snowy here...but a dog needs to be walked. Peeps, are you listening???

For both of these memes, I'm supposed to tag people. I don't love doing that so I'm just going to let you play along if you choose. Happy Thursday!

A really good day...

Today was an exceptionally good day. SO many things happened that have me still feeling happy...so happy in fact, that I want to share a few of them.

I think a list is in order. Imagine that.

1. Had coffee with my friend, Jamie. We hadn't seen each other since before Christmas and had a lot of catching up to do. Four hours of catching up in fact. It was GOOD and my heart needed that time with her today. Jamie is someone that I'm completely at ease with. She isn't shocked or put off by my honest emotions or by anything I say. I love that about her.

2. Came home and talked with HisGirl on the phone. I heart that girl too. She is wise and funny and it feels like I've known her for years! I could have talked to her for hours and I don't even like talking on the phone.

3. We went to church tonight. First time in over 5 years that I've been on a Wednesday night. The churches we've been a part of in the last several years haven't had Wednesday services, but the church we're going to now DOES. John's goal for our family in 2009 is to get connected in this new church, and so we jumped into tonight's activities with both feet.

Gotta tell you I was hesitant. Church on Wednesday nights is a routine that I have easily worked myself out of. I love evenings at home. I love not feeling rushed to get dinner on the table or homework completed before we rush out the door.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed tonight. It felt comfortable and familiar and very much like a place we belong. It was a surprise and a blessing! I'm pretty sure that my husband felt the same way.

Pretty please with sugar on top...

I LOVE getting your comments on my posts, friends. I especially loved the ones you left yesterday on the meal planning post...they were all encouraging and inspiring. Thank you!

So much of the time I want to respond individually to your comments, especially if you ask me a question.

But I can't respond to your comments if you don't link your profile to your email address.

So I need a big favor from you guys.

Go into your Blogger profile (on the left side of your Blogger dashboard), click Edit Profile, and enter your email address. It's not required, so it's likely that you left it blank. As long as you check the appropriate box, it will NOT show up on your blog or be accessible to anyone. It will allow people (like me) to respond to comments. If you're sensitive to your privacy, which is very understandable, you could just create a free email account for this purpose. Or, you could do nothing and ignore this little piece of blogging info! I'm okay with that. I won't be offended if you don't all rush to your profile and enter your email address.

Personal note to Ali: I really need you to do this or to send me your email address. You've asked some great questions that I want to respond to but not in the context of a blog post and I have NO way to get in touch with you. You can email me at meredith@lifeat7000feet.com

And credit to Angie for that last paragraph. I "lifted" her instructions from this post which I linked to a few weeks ago and is super informative for bloggers!

Meal Planning Part II

Again, let me say that I feel kinda silly sharing this because it's probably stuff that most of you already do anyway. I am NO expert. I am, however, a big believer in doing what works best for your family. What works for me might not work for you, so keep that in mind as you read this.

1. Sit down with the family calendar.
I plan meals two weeks at a time and do my shopping accordingly.

I find it helpful to sit down with our calendar and look at everything that we have going on in the two-week period I'm planning for. After-school activities mean that I need to plan easy meals, preferably crock-pot meals, on those nights.

Parties/Get-togethers (like Bunco)? Do I need to bring a dish? We used to get together with our small group for dinner and that was something I needed to factor into my meal planning. Classroom parties? Do I have cookies to make or a snack to bring? Are we having guests for dinner? That usually means I plan dessert. Is John out of town? If so, we have easy, easy meals.

Eating out? We usually plan at least once a month to eat out. Sometimes more, sometimes less. My favorite times of the week to eat out are Friday nights and Sundays after church.

Everything on the calendar gets incorporated into my planning.

2. Plan meals.
I gather all the grocery store ads and flip through them to see what's on sale. If chicken breasts are .99/lb, you can bet we're having lots of meals with chicken. If roast is on sale, I'll plan to have that too.

I also take a quick inventory of my pantry/freezer and plan around what I have an excess of.

Variety is key. I try to vary meats (chicken/beef/pork/fish) in each two week rotation as well as including some meatless meals (lentils/eggs/potatoes/pancakes).

When I lack inspiration, I ask my family for ideas. They're usually quick to suggest some favorites.

I also like to peruse cookbooks and cooking blogs for ideas. If I find a recipe I want to try, I make a note of the page number and cookbook it was in, or bookmark the website so that I can find it quickly when it's time to prepare the meal.

I also plan the sides to have with our meals. Usually this is a salad, bread, and/or veggie. It seems like we eat lots and lots of salad in the summer and more frozen veggies in the winter.

3. Make grocery shopping list from meal plan.
I go through the meals I've planned one by one and write down all the ingredients I need to buy. I like to do this a day or two before I go to the store so that I have time to think of other things I need and gives me time to gather my coupons. My list is very specific. If I think of something I know I need as I'm planning menus, then I jot it down at that time. I've been known to forget important things if I don't write them down immediately!

4. Write menu plan in list form and stick on fridge.
I bought this magnetic note pad at the dollar store and I keep a list of all the meals on my menu plan written down on it. Once I prepare a meal, I cross it off the list.

5. Check the menu daily and decide what's for dinner.
I've gotten in the habit over the years of looking at my list each morning and deciding what we're having for dinner that evening. This allows me to think about my day and be flexible when I need to. I don't assign a meal to each day because my schedule isn't always predictable.

After I decide what we're having (I often ask John or one of the kids to choose) I set the meat for that meal down to thaw.

If I'm going to be at home all day, I'll choose make something that requires a little more time and effort. If we have somewhere to go that night, I'll do something easy like tacos or spaghetti. On days that I have a Brownie meeting and get home at dinner time, I make sure I use my crock-pot.

I also try to be thinking ahead when I select meals each day. For example, I do not like coming home after church on Sundays (starving) and trying to figure out what we're having for lunch, so I try to make something on Saturday night that will ensure we have leftovers the next day.

My Best Tip

After I got into a regular routine of planning meals and sticking to my plan, I began to look for ways to simplify the process. While I can't tell you that I've found a way to make planning easier or faster, I have found a way to make meal preparation easier.

I buy meat in bulk when it's on sale. When I get home from the store, I "process" it all at the same time. With chicken, I look at my chicken meals and figure out how much I need to cook, then cook it and freeze in meal-sized portions in a labeled ziploc bag (quart size). If the recipe calls for raw chicken, I go ahead and slice/dice it before freezing, saving me a step later.Yes, that's a pumpkin in the background because I took these pictures in October--back before I talked myself out of doing this post!
I've found that freezing meat in ziploc bags works well because they stack nicely (taking up less room in freezer) and they thaw quickly.

These are all pictures of chicken, but I do the same thing with ground beef. I just cook it all at once and freeze in meal-sized portions. In the summer, we eat lots of burgers, so I make the patties and freeze between sheets of waxed paper.

In the mornings, I just pull the package out for whatever meal I've decided on and let it thaw.

This saves time each evening because you've eliminated one cooking step.

It saves clean up too because you make the mess once and you're done.

It has saved us money because it allows me to throw a meal together really quickly. One day not too ago, I forgot to put the meat down to thaw. I was planning on having chili and I didn't realize until 5:00pm that the meat was still frozen.

It was kids eat free night at our favorite restaurant and we had almost talked ourselves into going, but I realized that by the time we drove to the restaurant, ordered and received our food, I could have the pre-cooked meat thawed (thank goodness for microwaves) and simmering along with everything else in the pot. I got our meal from freezer to table in about 40 minutes. If I'd had to start from scratch that night we would have spent $30+ on dinner.

I also do the same thing with cheese. I buy a 2lb block (Tillamook!) every two weeks, and come home, shred it in my food processor, and store in a gallon sized ziploc bag in the fridge. Saves tons of time when you're throwing a meal together, plus it's cheaper to buy in a block than pre-shredded.

So................there you go.

I'm sure that I'm forgetting things, so I'm going to do a Part III later this week. If you have any questions, feel free to leave them in the comments and I'll try to answer them in that next post. If you have ideas or suggestions, add those too. I'd love for this to be a dialogue!

Snow Day!!!!!!!!

I woke up this morning, stumbled into the kitchen for my morning coffee, kissed John good morning, and looked outside.

It was snowing, and it was snowing hard.

How interesting. I checked the forecast yesterday and there wasn't a hint of snow.

John  and I turned on the morning news and heard the weather guy say 6-8 inches in our area of wind-driven snow (a mess) and rapidly deteriorating road conditions.

I gotta tell you that I've lived in Colorado for over 5 years now, but I HATE driving in this kind of weather. Call me a wimp, I don't care. I'll own it.

I took Will and his friend to a sleepover Friday afternoon. It was snowing really hard and the roads were icy. I slid the whole way there and back, and I was really shaken. After that, we went to pick Sarah's friend up for a sleepover at our house, and believe me, if I thought that cancelling wouldn't have broken my little girl's heart, I would have done so in a heartbeat, because the roads were treacherous.

I think both of those driving incidents spooked me because I decided this morning that my kids were staying home.

I have issues with our superintendent and his (lack of) judgment in calling snow days. So I called this one on my own.

I told the girls and they were thrilled. Will wasn't. He wanted to go to school. He told John the other day on the way there that he was really popular so I'm guessing he needed his social fix.I understand that completely. Thankfully John took him this morning and he has a ride home this afternoon so I don't have to get out in this mess.

The girls and I just finished up some french toast (used up the leftover french bread from last night!) and we're going to stay in our pjs and watch Pride and Predjudice later (they love it). We may even make some cookies. The day is wide open!

*UPDATE: After I decided the girls weren't going, our district called a 2-hour delay...and 2 hours later they upgraded the delay to a CLOSURE. John made it to work 1 hour and 25 minutes after leaving home. He affirmed my decision to keep the girls home. I think I want to be a consultant for our superintendent.

Meal Planning Part I - Purpose

I mentioned last fall that I was going to do a post on my meal planning system. I didn't forget, I just talked myself out of it. I felt sort of silly after I posted about my laundry system. I mean, really? Is this what it comes down to? Posting about laundry and meals?

I've been inspired by Joanne's theme of economy and then I read Holly's post about meal planning last week, and I decided that maybe I have some things I can throw into the mix. I am by no means an expert, but I have learned a few things that might help someone else.

So I'm rolling with it. Before I begin though, I want to give you a little background.

A few years ago, John came in from work and asked me what we were having for dinner. It was a summer evening, and I'd been at home with the kids all day doing much of nothing. I answered him honestly, "I don't know". I realized that "I don't know" was a frequent response of mine. He'd walk in the door (hungry) after working hard all day and I was very unprepared to meet an immediate need of his.

I felt very convicted in that moment. My hard-working husband asks very little of me. My kids were old enough that life didn't feel so labor intensive all the time. I was at home all day every day and yet I still struggled with getting a meal on the table.

I didn't really know what to do with that conviction, so I started praying about it. I didn't love cooking (at all) and saw it as a necessary evil. I began asking God to change my heart and to give me a desire to minister to my husband and family in this way.

That may sound like a strange thing to pray about, but I really wanted to change my ways and my attitude, and I can say with all honesty that God did begin to grow that desire in me. I purposed for a month to look at preparing dinner as my "job". If I only accomplished one thing every day, I wanted it to be dinner. I can be pretty determined when I want to be and I was VERY determined to follow-through on this.

So, if you're new to meal planning, I guess the first place to start is to ask yourself what your purpose in doing this is. Is it to minister to your family? To save money (a great by-product of planning!)? To meet a physical need? To eat healthier? To spend time quality time together as a family over dinner? Determine your purpose and go from there.

Next up: The technical stuff

Already feeling better...

I feel like I'm back on track after my no-spending flop this week.

I went grocery shopping today, and I did really well!

I spent $256 for two weeks worth of groceries, household items, and food for Bunco! I thought that was pretty darn good. Of course, I'll have to go back next week for fruit, veggies, milk and bread (and coffee...totally forgot to buy that today) but I still think I'll come in at less than $300 for this two-week period.

And that makes me happy! (Makes John happy too!)

I've decided that I'm going to start posting my 2-week meal plans on my recipe blog. In fact, I posted the meals I shopped for today just a little while ago. You can check my menu plan out here.

OH YEAH, I saved $28.89 in coupons! I was jazzed about that.

So many people tell me that they just don't think it's worth it to clip coupons, but let me show you that yes, it IS worth it.

This is just a sampling of things I bought today.

Toilet paper, laundry detergent (I love Tide), Cascade, a razor for John, and body wash for Will.
I added up the regular price of these five items from my register receipt. Total: $43.66 (Ugh...not good for five items.)

Then, I added up the sale price of these items. This is the price I would have paid had I not had coupons. Total: $30.40 (better)

Next, I added up the price I paid with my coupons. I had
1.50/off Tide
1.00/off Cascade
4.00/off Fusion razor
Free body wash with purchase of Fusion razor (cost was 3.99)
.50/off Charmin
Total: $19.41

$19.41 is good, but Proctor and Gamble had a promo deal going on that if you spent $25 on participating products at this store, you got an additional $5 off at the register.

SO, my total for these 5 products (before tax) was $14.41

That ends up being less than $3 per product.

I'd say it pays to clip coupons wouldn't you???

I also got *free* deodorant today and paid $2.02 for a tube of mascara by combining sales and coupons.

The money I saved today made me feel a little better about the money I wasted last week!

PS--I wrote an entire post about couponing last spring. You can read it here.

No-Spend Challenge: Week One

Ugh...this is embarrassing.

I didn't do so well you guys.

I posted that challenge on January 2, so let me give you the day-by-day spending breakdown.

January 2:
-0-

January 3:
$11.76 at McDonald's. See, a day into this and I'm spending when the goal is to be NOT spending. Ugh. We took a huge load of recycling to the drop off center and still had some more things to do in town before heading home. It was lunchtime and we didn't plan ahead well so we bought the kids lunch. The parents ate when we got home.

January 4:
-0-

January 5:
$14 on haircut for Will. I'm tempted not to count that since he needed one and I couldn't wait 3 more weeks for February to roll around, but I didn't exclude haircuts, so it counts.
Also went to Walmart and got groceries, but only bought what was on my list.

January 6:
-0- (Thanks, John for re-gifting that Starbucks card that AK gave you! You're THE best!)

January 7:
$8.00 I spent Tuesday and Wednesday at home cleaning/organizing/purging. I tackled the girls' room on this day and decided that they needed a new lamp to match their new decor. Hmmmm...that no-spend thing wasn't going to make this easy. I decided to check out the home furnishing consignment store that opened last fall and see if they had anything suitable. They didn't. In fact, I thought their stuff was way over-priced.

So, on the way back home, I stopped at my favorite consignment store to check their small inventory of home furnishings. No lamp, but I did find a pair of brand new black mules, and this cute little iron bird. The shoes were on sale for $14 and the bird was on the 80% off rack marked down to $1.80.  Yeah, that adds up to more than $8, but I had a credit from some stuff I sold last fall and my grand total was $8.

You might be rolling your eyes and thinking that I can justify almost anything (and yes, I probably can), but John gave me some money after Christmas to buy some new black shoes. My old ones were in really bad shape. I was going to wait until I found a great sale, but I doubt I would have found any (brand new!) for $8. I love them and I'm not going to feel guilt about this purchase!

January 8:
$9 I've been motivated all week to get things clean and orderly around our house. John's parents gave us a new rug for Christmas (love it!) and once we got it down, I realized that pattern in the rug was competing with my red fireplace wall as the focal point of the room. I decided to keep the rug and ditch the red wall. I've never liked the red much anyway. Lucky for me, I had 3/4 gallon of paint in the basement (matches my wall color) and enough Kilz left from my last project to not have to buy those items. I spent $9 on paint roller and edger refills, tray liners, and a plastic drop cloth. Not too bad. And yes, I could have waited until February, but you know what? I had time and motivation to do it now. I might not have either of those next month!
January 9:
Oh dear. A spendy day.
I don't have a total, but I went to Co Springs to buy a birthday gift for Will's friend--a gift card to BestBuy. Also ran in Bed, Bath, and Beyond to check out their lamps. Didn't find anything, but bought a Yankee candle (Christmas Cookie) marked down to $7.49. I had a 20% off coupon so I got it for $6. Totally got sucked into that deal.

(I need a minute to tell you about Bed, Bath, and Beyond. If there's one close to you, get on their mailing list and they will send you 20% coupons all the time. Seriously, it seems like I get one a week. They will let you use expired coupons (so don't toss them), and if you forget your coupon, you can bring it back with your register receipt and they will adjust the price. You can also use the coupon on sale items. Obviously, I'm a big fan of that store!)

We also went to Chick-Fil-A for dinner. I ordered for myself and the kids and walked away while John paid because I didn't want to know how much we spent.  I could tell you that Sarah finally had the sleepover that we've been putting off since her birthday in JULY and that we wanted to make it special for her and that her friend lives super close to Chik-Fil-A and that the snow was terrible and it took us forever to drive the few miles to pick her friend up and we were all starving. But that would totally sound like I was trying to justify things...and the bottom line is that I caved. I spent money. Willingly.

Here's to a MUCH better week this week. I'm tightening my belt and am determined to do BETTER.

How did you guys do?

Updated to add: Overall, I realize that I wasn't as motivated to not spend as I'd hoped. All the things I bought weren't necessary or needed (except maybe the haircut and shoes). I willfully chose to buy them. Other purchases (lunch/dinner) could have been avoided by better planning. Sure, some of those purchases were bargains, but where was my resolve to THINK before spending? Again, I'm determined to do better this week. If at first you don't succeed, try, try again.

And, hey, I don't know how to make that image above into a cute little button Holly made that image above into a button for me, and you're certainly welcome to steal it and use it on your blog if you want. See if you can copy and paste it from here, if not email me and I'll send you the code. Thank you, Holly!!!

A List

I don't have the time or energy for a well thought out post, but I do have much I want to say, so how about a list?

(You know I'm a list girl, right?)

1. Thank you, thank you, thank you for the comments about land lines and cell phones. You guys gave me some GREAT things to think about and some terrific ideas. I'll keep you posted on what we decide.

2. Many of you have asked about my dad. He had a follow-up appointment with his surgeon yesterday. He's healing well and feeling okay. His doc gave him a chemo schedule which he will begin in about a month. I watched Barbara Walters interview with Patrick Swayze the other night and found it very informative...and very emotional. There is a part of me that wants to take in every piece of information I can find, and another part of me that becomes so easily overwhelmed with it all. I've yet to find a good balance between the two.

3. Some of you were curious about the globe puzzle that Sarah got for Christmas. Well, it was a gift from Santa, and I have no idea how he instructed his elves to make that, but Sarah told me she saw it in the catalog from our local educational supply store.

4. I LOVE Facebook. If you're a Facebook holdout please ask yourself why. I've reconnected with some dear friends lately that I thought I had lost touch with forever. It makes me so happy to find old friends and to have a fun way to keep up with them from now on!

5. Know what starts TODAY? Girl Scout cookie sales. And guess what I have living in my house? A Brownie Girl Scout. If you're local and you don't have a cookie connection, I know a super cute six-year-old that would love to give you a call.

6. I've been highly motivated this week to get some stuff done around my house. Today, I painted something that has been bugging me for two years. Pics coming soon...don't have time to upload them right now. (Ooooh, suspense!)

7. We are loving this game that we got for Christmas. Anyone played it? It is fun and challenging! I especially love games that require you to use your brain! Abbey has asked to play every night this week, and she's really good at it too.

8. Okay, the no-spend challenge is proving to be challenging. I'm planning a post on that this weekend.

9. Yesterday, John brought home about 10 different cover designs for his book. VERY exciting! We got to see the publishing process unfold a few years ago when he wrote some Bible studies, and the evolution of a book is very, very cool! It's definitely more exciting this time around though because he has a little more say in matters like cover design. I'm so proud of him!

10. I don't really have anything else to say, but 10 seemed like a good number to end on.  Are you as excited as I am that the weekend is upon us????

Dilemna...

For over a year now John and I have been thinking of disconnecting our home phone line and going completely cellular.

The only reason I keep squashing the idea is because we sometimes let Will stay at home alone for short periods. John and I both have cell phones, but if there wasn't a home phone, how would he contact us in an emergency?

Not a day goes by that Will doesn't ask/scheme for a cell phone. He really is in the minority at his school. I've watched the kids file out of his middle school in the afternoon and 90% of them have cell phones which they flip open/turn on the minute the bell rings. (And yes, I realize that being in the minority isn't necessarily a bad thing.)

Will's 12th birthday is next month and it would thrill his little techy heart if we gifted him with a phone. At this moment, the matter is under parental consideration.

In light of that...........................

I'm wondering if any of you have any sage advice for me?
Do you have a land line? And/or a cell plan?
Do your kids have cell phones? If so, how old are your children? And what limits/rules do you have in place?
Have you had a similar dilemna? If so, how did you handle it?

I know that we could keep our land line and just get the basic service, but you know what? It's actually cheaper to add a third phone to our cellular plan. Plus, my cordless phone is on it's very last leg. I can't even answer half the time and I can buy a new cell for the cost of a cordless phone.  From an economic standpoint, it makes so much sense to go completely cellular.

I'd love any and all advice you want to send my way! If you have a particularly strong opinion about this matter...I'll be happy to listen to what you have to say.

Sparkly!

I got SO much done today, and I am so jazzed!

My house was in bad shape. I'm normally a neat and tidy kind of girl, but it was really out of control and gross! My friend stopped by yesterday afternoon to deliver some Brownie paperwork and she asked if she could use the restroom. Of course I said yes, but I cringed inside because it was SO dirty. I'm not just saying that either...it was digusting.

I woke up this morning motivated to clean and I jumped in head first after I dropped the girls off at school.  (I was a little teary seeing them off, but John gifted me with a Starbucks card someone had given him and it was the perfect combination of pick-me-up and caffeine that I needed!)

I really didn't miss the laptop today. When I stopped this afternoon to start dinner, I realized that the recipe I needed was on my recipe blog and I didn't have it written down anywhere else. That was the only time I thought about the computer. A quick call to John got me back on track and dinner was ready when he got home! (By the way, if you've never tried lentils, this is a great recipe. Even my pickiest eater loves it. Lentils are super cheap and very nutritious.)

In the midst of cleaning, I managed a little painting project. My sweet friend, Joan, gave me a calendar frame a long time ago. I haven't used it in several years because it was the wrong shade of green for my kitchen and I haven't had the right size calendar.

On New Year's Eve, I bought this Edward Hopper 2009 calendar. I hoped it might be the right size to fit into my frame, and when I got home I discovered it was!

I painted the frame black and I LOVE the result! (And yes, I know my calendar is on wrong month.)

I also hung up my Nana's collection of souvenir spoons. My mom gave them to me last summer, but we accidentally drove off and left them at her house! I got them from her last week when we were in Arkansas, and she also gave me the display rack. I found the perfect spot for it in my kitchen. LOVE it! I have lots more spoons so I guess I'm going to switch them out from time to time.
I got more done today than I have in a long time. I told John I think I'm going to make him take the computer away more often. It's a big distraction for me and I'm not disciplined enough to leave it alone. Out of sight, out of mind seems to be key for me!

Drastic, But Necessary

I have a date with my mop, vacuum, and other various cleaning supplies today.

In order for me to accomplish all that I want to accomplish today, I'm packing my computer into it's sleek booq bag and sending it to work with John. It's a drastic measure, yes, but I know that I cannot resist the calling of "Mac" when I walk past. He lures me with "just one quick little email check" and it's all downhill from there. So...all you blog, Facebook, and Twitter friends will just have to live without me today. I'll catch up with you guys this evening when my house is all sparkly and clean.

I'm already weakening...I must go now. Bye.

It's Monday. It's Random. And It's Okay!

John pulled out of the driveway about twenty minutes ago. I may or may not have cried. I said yesterday that we'd had fourteen days of family togetherness. I was wrong. It was SIXTEEN. And he was just as sad to leave as we were to see him go. *sniff sniff*

The kids and I are going to run some errands this morning--to keep our minds off of missing him and to snap us out of our lazing around doing nothing all day mode.

We're headed to the library since it snowed all day yesterday (we got at least 6 inches!) and we didn't venture out for our traditional Sunday afternoon trip.

We're also heading to Walmart. We made a trip last week once we got back from Arkansas, but I forgot to get stuff for school lunches. Plus, we're out of coffee filters and that isn't good.

I'm dying to go to Target and Hobby Lobby, but am going to resist that urge. It's 14 degrees right now and you have no idea how hard it is going to be for me to resist the warmness of Starbucks.  If you're clueless to what I'm talking about, click here to read about my January No-Spend Challenge.

Speaking of that challenge, I've decided to check in once a week and let you know how it's going. Probably on Friday.  Maybe Saturday. Let me see what my schedule looks like later this week.

Okay, back to errands. We're also going to run by Blockbuster and switch out our movies. We subscribe to Blockbuster.com and for $21/month we get to keep 3 dvds out at a time (by mail) and can return the mailers to the store and exchange for free rentals. Considering that we don't have cable and that one in-store rental is $5, I think it's a good deal.

So...I have six movies to return right now (3 of which I can trade for 3 more--free!)
I'm returning:
Holiday Inn (a very old favorite that the girls and I watched together)
Hancock (didn't watch it)
Burn After Reading (weird movie)
Wall-E (I didn't like it)
Journey to the Center of the Earth (kids watched without me)
The Visitor (I liked it!)

We're also going to write thank you notes today. I've procrastinated because I needed to buy some notecards. Last night we made a list of who we need to write them to, and I decided we were going to make our own cards.  That's on the agenda for today as well.

Last night, the girls and I put together a puzzle that Sarah got for Christmas. The one thing she kept telling us she wanted from Santa was a globe puzzle. Santa delivered.

We spent a few hours working on it.  You know, putting the whole world together is hard work! While trying to snap the last piece in, I dropped the globe and we had to rebuild a few continents (arghh!) but we're finished, and we're proud. Very cool, huh? (And very educational too!)

Thank goodness the back of the pieces are numbered.  I promise you that is the only way I was able to complete this baby!

Blue...

I'm so blue today.

Our family of five has been together, day in and day out, for the last 14 days. Tomorrow John goes back to work. The kids don't start back until Tuesday and I imagine they'll be sad along with me tomorrow when it dwindles down to four of us at home.

I can't express how much I love being at home with my family. Lazing around. Reading. Watching movies. Playing games. Talking. Running errands. Cooking. Eating. Laughing. We all love it.

I'm so blue right now and wishing I could make this day linger forever.

A friend called me last evening and our conversation turned to the start of school on Tuesday. She asked if I was "so ready for them to go back".

I'm not. At all.

This should keep you busy for awhile...

Alright, I've got some linkety goodness for you today.

This post on Kellie's blog made me laugh out loud.  I bet some of you moms will immediately relate!

And I agree wholeheartedly with Amber on the subject of this post. I have a date with my house on Tuesday when my kids start back to school. I also intend to sneak in some practice time on Guitar Hero, but that's another post entirely.

My friend, Lisa, has been creative lately.  Check out her latest project. I love it!

I had a great idea for a birthday gift I can make for Abbey's best little friend who is having a birthday soon.  I'm going to make a tooth fairy pillow like this one I had growing up.  I have everything I need on hand, including some cute fabric.  I might even try and change it up a little by making the pocket a heart shape. How's that for being resourceful and sticking to my no-spend plan?

I finally updated my recipe blog with some new recipes.  I found a great recipe for beef stew, and I even decided to break the family code and share my Nana's cornbread recipe.  If you haven't tried this spaghetti soup, promise me you will!  It is amazing.

When I read this post of Joanne's, I was compelled to go and dig out this piece that I bought years ago at an antique store in Camden, AR. My nana had a print in her kitchen with this saying on it and it was SO true! Everyone congregated in her kitchen.  I need to clean this up and re-frame it and hang it up because I love this piece.
If you've ever had questions about Google reader, then please read this very informative post of Angie's.  It explains everything you need to know about Google reader and blogging in general. Please (I beg you) pay careful attention to the part about editing your profile to include your email address.  I want so badly to reply to some of the comments you guys post on here, but I can't because your profile isn't linked to your email address.

And if you want to add me to your Google reader, here are the instructions.  My blog is problematic for some reason.

If you're still in a mood to laugh, read this post of Angie's too.  It's hilarious.

In case you were wondering, I haven't mustered up the courage to do this...yet.

Four Christmases...and I'm not talking about the movie!

Four Christmases. That's how many we had this year. Christmas morning with the kids and John's parents. Christmas afternoon with the rest of John's family. Christmas at my sister's house, and Christmas at my dad's. It was slightly overwhelming.

Because this is a weblog, and because I like to document family stuff, here are some of my favorite pics from those four Christmases. Enjoy.

My January Challenge

I don't know about you, but our family spends SO much money in December. Sure, there are many expenses we plan and budget for, but it's the little things that really add up and leave me feeling like we just bleed money during the month. Twenty dollars here or forty dollars there adds up so quickly. Being out of town for two weeks in December (two weeks!) also seems to have exaggerated some of our spending.

With that in mind, I'm challenging myself to spend nothing outside of groceries, gas, and household items for the month of January.

(Just typing that out makes me a little nervous.)

John and I talked about it this morning and he's on board.

Honestly, we're not big spenders anyway.  We rarely eat out.  We don't buy "stuff" we don't need.  We don't have every techno-gadget that comes out (or very many at all for that matter), and our closets contain wardrobe basics.  We try very hard to live within our means, BUT...I still think we could do better.

I'm not quite sure what this no-spend month will look like for me/us.

I think more than anything, I just want to think twice before adding things to my buggy (same thing as a cart for all you non-Southerners) or before handing over my debit card for purchases.  I want to ask myself if I really, really need something or if maybe I can get creative and use something I already have instead.

There are some challenges that already come to mind.  I know a couple of my kids' friends have birthdays this month.  I'm hosting Bunco and need to come up with a hostess gift.  But I'm already thinking creatively, and that's a good thing!

The thing I anticipate being the hardest?  I'm a slightly addicted huge fan of Starbucks and our local teahouse, making at least one trip a week.  Maybe January will find me having a friend over for coffee/tea instead, or coming home and making a cup for pennies, or possibly using up my stash of gift cards that I've been saving.

Could be an interesting month.

I realize that I'll probably have to give myself some grace in this, and that's okay.  I'm not much of a legalist anyway.  I really view this as more of a challenge to get me to change my thinking patterns than anything.

So...anyone wanna play along with me and try to curb your spending this month?  Or anyone wanna volunteer to ask me how I'm doing from time to time?

Twenty Years Ago Today...

...I was in Dallas, TX with my family for the Cotton Bowl!

It was Arkansas vs. UCLA.

I was an eighteen-year-old freshman at OBU and had been dating John for a few months. I brought him back a sweatshirt from the Hard Rock Cafe in Dallas. I bet he still has it somewhere. I say that because the other day he put on a red, JCrew, button-up shirt that he wore on our first date (from 20 years ago, people)!

Anyway, I was green with envy when I saw this ornament hanging on my sister's Christmas tree last week.

My great-aunt Libby (who'll be ninety-years old next week) made it.

And you know I'm sentimental about stuff like this.  My favorite thing about it is her name written on the back.

I was even greener when I saw this ornament.

My Nana made this one to commemorate the Hogs win in the 1978 Orange Bowl. (I was 8 years old in 1978!)

Yeah, all of my family is just a wee bit crazy about the Razorbacks.

But aren't these ornaments a GREAT idea for sports fans?

Speaking of ornaments. I took our tree down yesterday and counted all of ornaments on our tree. Wanna guess how many?

336.

Ornaments.

On.

Our.

Christmas.

Tree.

That's a LOT of ornaments, people! And like the ones pictured above, they each have a story to tell. Made me a teensy bit sad to bid them farewell until next year.

I hope my sister realizes what great restraint I exercised by leaving those two hanging on her tree.

Happy New Year!

I love New Year's Day! I have no idea what lies in store for the next 364 days, but the adventurer in me gets a little excited thinking about the possibilites!

I've been thinking about my goals for 2009. I had a LOT of time to think while in the car last week.

Last year, I categorized them into physical, spiritual, and creative categories. Totally works for me this year too.

Here's what I've come up with:

Physical:
1. Climb another Colorado 14er with my Summit Sisters! We got together with them last night and talked about some possibilities! I'm excited! (hence all the exclamation marks!)!!!!

Creative:
2. Continue to chip away at our family albums.
3. Continue blogging (because it IS a creative outlet, right?)
4. Start a book club. A plan is already in the works...and the first book that I will suggest is The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. Seriously, people, it is the most fascinating book I've read in a long time. Read it!

Spiritual:
5. Strive for consistency in God's word. I don't have a quiet time every day. I don't know why that is so hard for me, but it IS. I'm not committing to every single day but rather consistency because that seems a bit more realistic (for me).

Looking back at last year, I'd say I did reasonably well with my goals.

I didn't get away every single month for a spiritual retreat, but I managed about five of them. That's pretty good. I didn't take up a new hobby, but I did scrapbook consistently (and that's always been my hobby of choice) and I did pull my sewing machine out for a few projects. I'm good with that too. And I DID CLIMB PIKES PEAK, OH YES I DID! I'm kinda proud of that one. So all in all, I'd say I did okay!
